Shannon's Cafe has been serving the Bryan community for more than five decades, built on family, hard work, and a passion for great food.
The story began in 1970 when Bessie Shannon started a successful barbecue business. Known for her delicious cooking, Bessie quickly gained a loyal customer base. One day, while preparing a meal for her family in the kitchen, a customer caught the aroma and asked if they could try what she was cooking.
After tasting the homemade meal, they loved it so much that Bessie began adding soul food dishes to the menu. The demand grew rapidly, and before long, she transitioned completely from barbecue to the soul food recipes that would become the foundation of Shannon's Cafe.
In 1981, Bessie purchased a former washateria located at 601 San Jacinto Lane and transformed it into Shannon's Cafe. The restaurant quickly became a beloved gathering place where family, friends, and neighbors could enjoy home-cooked meals and Southern hospitality.
In 1985, ownership passed to Doris Durens. Doris had a deep love for cooking, spending time with family, and supporting her community. During her years of ownership, she continued the traditions that made Shannon's Cafe special while helping support local projects and contributing to the growth of the Bryan community.
In 2012, Tommy Durens took over the family business. A devoted father of eight and serial entrepreneur, Tommy brought a vision for growth while preserving the restaurant's rich heritage. Through determination and hard work, he built a brand-new facility without outside business funding. In 2015, Shannon's Cafe officially transitioned to its current location at 603 San Jacinto Lane. The original building at 601 San Jacinto remains family-owned and is still used for storage today.
Outside of the restaurant, Tommy serves as a deacon at Lily of the Valley Church in Bryan, Texas. He enjoys fishing, riding motorcycles, and traveling with family and friends. Looking toward the future, Tommy and the Shannon's Cafe family are excited to explore new partnerships that will allow their famous homemade dressing to be enjoyed by customers in stores beyond the restaurant.
Today, Shannon's Cafe remains a family-owned business dedicated to serving authentic soul food, creating lasting memories, and continuing a tradition that has brought people together for generations.
